Gli ebrei sono più intelligenti di tutti gli altri. Una donna cinese che visita una sinagoga fa  sicuramente lo shopping per un marito ebreo. Il Pakistan non  "è riuscito a produrre assolutamente nulla" in tutta la sua storia [oltre a armi nucleari]. Una soluzione di due Stati sarebbe una buona idea se lo stato dall'altra parte del confine di Israele fosse  il Canada. I palestinesi devono "guadagnare" il diritto all'autodeterminazione. Così ha parlato  Bret Stephens  Martedì sera  alla Yeshiva University in occasione di una tavola rotonda sul futuro del popolo ebraico.
L'Auditorium Lamport a Washington  era pieno di uomini che indossavano  yarmulkes e donne vestite   modestamente  che hanno  applaudito  a queste e ad altre simili osservazioni fatte da Stephens.  Boteach (il moderatore) e Stephens sono stati raggiunti dalla  Yeshiva University presidente ,Richard M. Joel, che attualmente sta affrontando la terribile ricaduta di  una class action  portata avanti da  ex studenti  per   $ 380,000,000 per gli  abusi sessuali subiti   e da Sheldon Adelson, il magnate dei casinò,  uno dei più ricchi uomini  del  mondo. Quest'ultimo fatto è stato menzionato un paio di volte nel corso della manifestazione  durata  per quasi due ore (Oops! nessun tempo per le domande).
L'argomento doveva essere  : gli  ebrei continueranno a esistere di fronte a "l'Iran, l'assimilazione e la minaccia " ma  Boteach non sembrava molto preparato e la conversazione era sconnessa trasformandosi  in uno scambio di congratulazioni  sulla  superiorità ebraica
Adelson ha anche ricordato, come riportato da diversi media, che  sarebbe opportuno   lanciare  una bomba nucleare  nel deserto  iraniano come  mezzo per costringere la Repubblica islamica a rinunciare al suo programma di arricchimento .
Secondo Adelson, non esiste una cosa come il popolo palestinese (apparentemente i  palestinesi sono  "siriani del sud") e Yasser Arafat voleva  la distruzione del popolo ebraico.  Il miliardario ha  allegramente riconosciuto, quasi con orgoglio, di non conoscere  la differenza tra sciiti e sunniti ,insistendo  sul fatto che l'ex presidente iraniano Ahmadenijad credeva  in "qualcosa chiamato un Imam nascosto" ossia un  messia  per cui, secondo il suo credo religioso, tutti gli ebrei dovevano morire  in modo  che l'imam potesse  rivelare se stesso. Per  questo l'Iran aveva minacciato Israele : Ahmadenijad era un "radicale Ebreo odiatore" che voleva  portare l' Imam nascosto al suo popolo.
Nessuno degli altri relatori ha sfidato il magnate dei casinò su tali  osservazioni  accolte  con  forti applausi da parte del pubblico ricettivo. Il Presidente  Joel  si è limitato a propagandano i valori ebraici nelle  famiglie,  il diritto di nascita, il viaggio  a  gratis in  Israele a disposizione dei giovani adulti , come  mezzo per salvare il popolo ebraico dalla assimilazione.
Gli  uomini sembravano piuttosto confusi circa le loro paure, le speranze e le aspirazioni per il popolo ebraico. Joel ha parlato di valori religiosi , mentre Stephens si è descritto come un Ebreo  laico che  nella  "fedeltà" allo Stato ebraico , come altri, ha trovato la sua identità  di ebreo .
Israele, in sintesi , non è in realtà un paese costituito da individui imperfetti, ma un totem èer cementare l'identità  per gli ebrei della diaspora.
I relatori hanno parlato in cliché sciovinisti circa la superiorità intellettuale del popolo ebraico e lo Stato di Israele, elencando i  premi Nobel. Stephens ha lamentato il fatto che quest'anno il Nobel per la fisica sia  stato dato a due accademici israeliani migrati in università americane. "Dobbiamo trovare un modo per tenerli in Israele" ha declamato l'uomo che ha lasciato Gerusalemme per lavorare nel Wall Street Journal.
Ma d'altra parte gli uomini sembravano concordare sul fatto che Israele è  sull'orlo della catastrofe imminente e  della distruzione. L'elenco delle minacce comprendevano:  armi nucleari iraniane, omicidi  arabi e  assimilazione.
Si possono  forse tollerare le opinioni espresse nella notte di Martedì in semi dementi, ricchi e anziani  zii,ma   non da un uomo che  esercita influenza politica ai più alti livelli  e  non da qualcuno che scrive per uno dei giornali più importanti in America. E 'stato imbarazzante assistere a questo evento anti-intellettuale, in particolare presso un istituto accademico che doveva essere il gioiello della corona del moderno movimento ortodosso del giudaismo.

Israel as Totem for the Jewish identity of Lisa Goldman

 Jews are smarter than everyone else. A Chinese woman who visits a synagogue is surely shopping for a Jewish husband. Pakistan has “managed to produce absolutely nothing" in its entire history [besides nuclear weapons]. A two-state solution would be a good idea if the state on the other side of Israel's border was Canada. The Palestinians have to “earn” the right to self determination. Thus spake Bret Stephens, former editor of the Jerusalem Post and current Wall Street Journal foreign affairs columnist, at Tuesday night's Yeshiva University panel discussion on the future of the Jewish people.
The Lamport Auditorium at the university's Washington Heights campus was packed with men wearing yarmulkes and women in modest dress who applauded these and similar remarks made by Stephens, who won a Pulitzer Prize—which I know, because moderator Shmuley Boteach (“America's rabbi”) mentioned the fact several times.

Boteach and Stephens were joined by Yeshiva University president Richard M. Joel, who is currently dealing with the dire fallout from a $380 million class action sex abuse suit brought by former students, and by Sheldon Adelson, a casino mogul who is one of the richest men in the world. The latter fact was mentioned quite a few times over the course of the event, which lasted for nearly two hours (oops! no time for questions).
The topic was supposed to be whether or not Jews would continue to exist in the face of “Iran, Assimilation, and the Threat to Israel and Jewish Survival,” But Boteach did not seem very prepared and the conversation was unfocused and rambling. Ultimately it devolved into a congratulatory and reactionary exchange about Jewish superiority, which involved a lot of name dropping.
Boteach tried to win the famous name game by mentioning his time as an outreach rabbi to students at Oxford University, where he befriended senator-elect Cory Booker. But Adelson, who really should be a poster boy for campaign finance reform, won with his “deep, personal knowledge of Bibi [Benjamin Netanyahu] and Olmert.” Which he mentioned a couple of times.

Adelson also mentioned, as reported by several media outlets, that the United States should lob a nuclear bomb at a swathe of unpopulated Iranian desert as a means of forcing the Islamic Republic to give up its enrichment program. Strength, said Adelson, “Is all they understand.”
According to Adelson, there is no suchthing as a Palestinian people (apparently Palestinians are actually“southern Syrians”) and Yasser Arafat stood for the destructionof the Jewish people. While the casino billionaire cheerfullyacknowledged, almost as a matter of pride, that he did not actuallyknow the difference between Shi'a and Sunni Islam, he insisted thatformer Iranian president Ahmadenijad believed in “something calleda Hidden Imam” who was a messiah, and that according to hisreligious belief all the Jews needed to be dead before the imam couldreveal himself. Which was why Iran threatened Israel, becauseAhmadenijad was a “radical Jew hater” who wanted to bring theHidden Imam to his people.
None of the other panelists challenged the casino mogul on his remarks, which were greeted with loud cracks of applause from the receptive audience. President Joel let the other three men enjoy being bombastic, while he limited himself to touting Jewish family values and Birthright, the free Israel trip available to young adults, as a means of saving the Jewish people from assimilation. Adelson donates heavily to Birthright.

But the men seemed rather confused about their fears, hopes and aspirations for the Jewish people. Joel talked up religious values and parochial day schools, while Stephens described himself as a Jew so secular that he risked “tipping into Unitarianism,” adding that his primary Jewish quality was “loyalty.” Israel's existence, said Stephens, was the reason “super secular” types like himself were proud to identify as Jews. The primarily Orthodox audience approved of both men's definition of Jewishness.
Israel, it seemed, was not actually a country filled with disparate, flawed individuals, but an identity totem for Jews of the diaspora.
The panelists spoke in chauvinistic cliches about the intellectual superiority of the Jewish people and the state of Israel, totting up Nobel laureates. Stephens bemoaned the fact that this year's Nobel laureates in physics included two Israeli academics who had migrated to American universities. “We have to find a way to keep them in Israel,” declaimed the man who left Jerusalem to take up a position with the Wall Street Journal.
But on the other hand the men seemed toagree that Israel was teetering on the edge of imminent catastropheand destruction. The list of threats included Iranian nukes,murderous Arabs and assimilation.

One can perhaps tolerate the viewsexpressed on Tuesday night in semi demented, rich old uncles. But notfrom a man who purchases and wields political influence at thehighest levels. And not from someone who writes for one of the mostimportant newspapers in America. It was embarrassing to witness thisanti-intellectual event, particularly at an academic institution thatwas supposed to be the crown jewel of Judaism's modern Orthodoxmovement.
