Cisgiordania : vivere in zona C: il problema dell'acqua

Next time take a shower or even just pour yourself a glass of water, stop for a second and think about this: tens of thousands of Palestinians in Area C, the West Bank, aren’t hooked up to any water grid whatsoever. You might very well ask “Why?”, and the answer is that the Civil Administration, Israel’s executive body in the West Bank, refuses to connect them to the grid.
The Civil Administration is responsible for all water-related projects in Area C and no water-related project – including digging wells, transporting water, connecting to a water grid or recycling wastewater – can be carried out without its authorization. The Civil Administration drags out the authorization process for years, and then – surprise, surprise – ultimately denies most requests.

How much does a glass of water cost?
Palestinian communities that are off the water grid rely on collecting rainwater and purchasing water from tanks at high costs. During the summer, an individual family’s average monthly expenses for water can be as much as 1,250 to 2,000 shekels a month (approx. 360 to 570 USD), equal to about half of their monthly expenses. In contrast, for the same amount of water consumption, a family in a nearby settlement spends an average of only 150 shekels (approx. 43 USD) on water – 1.4% of their monthly expenses.
As a result of this policy , residents of some Palestinian communities in the West Bank have at their disposal far less water than the minimum 100 liters per person, per day, recommended by the World Health Organization. In the southern West Bank, the residents of some 42 communities consume fewer than 60 liters a day, and shepherds and their families in the northern Jordan Valley consume only about 20 liters a day.
Sintesi personale
