Thousands Join Combatants for Peace in Commemorating Israeli Memorial Day

Defense Ministry Overturns Decision to Refuse Palestinians Permits to Join Memorial Day Event
Combatants for Peace Israeli-Palestinian Memorial Day Ceremony
3 Rabbis for Human Rights writting about the Israeli-Palestinian Memorial ceremony yesterday
The
joint Israeli-Palestinian Memorial Day ceremony yesterday was once
again unsettling and full of hope juxtaposed with sadness; it is one of
the most powerful and important things happening today in Israel.
Of special interest were the people whose path to this shared direction in life, this non-violent orientation, resulted from a accident of biography, unconnected to their upbringing: the disturbing story of the father who lost his daughter in a terrorist attack, and who thought night after night about taking his gun and shooting Palestinian construction workers next door [until he realized he would create more vengeful relatives like him]; the story of a right-wing-Mizrahi-traditional Jerusalemite whose encounter with Arab waiters, her proletarian coworkers at a hotel, led her to discover a world of institutionalized neglect, not of hate-filled monsters; a Palestinian whose younger brother was killed by an IDF bullet, a death that caused him such pain that it convinced him no one should ever have to feel it. And above all, the words of Bassam Armin [whose daughter was shot in the back by the Border Guards], who said in his address [our paraphrase]: This land was certainly promised to us, to two peoples; it merely remains unclear whether it has been promised to us from beneath [i.e. as the buried] or from above [as the living].
